Everyday anxiety: how to spot it and what to do today
April 12, 20266 minby Dra. Laura Martinez
Anxiety doesn't always show up shouting. It often slips into everyday life: thinking you left something on, that sweat before a meeting, the broken sleep at 3 a.m.
Three early signs
- Looping thoughts. You replay the same scenario without landing on a decision.
- Unexplained muscle tension. Especially neck, jaw and shoulders.
- Avoiding small tasks. Putting off replying to a message becomes a mountain.
What to do today
- Name what you feel. A name lowers the intensity. "What I'm feeling is anticipatory anxiety about Tuesday's meeting."
- 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale 4 seconds, hold 7, exhale 8. Repeat 3 cycles.
- Talk to someone who gets your context. Culture matters: speaking in Spanish with someone who understands your dual-cultural life cuts the sense of isolation in half.
If this repeats weekly, don't wait for it to become chronic. Connect with a Spanish-speaking therapist. A single session costs less than the toll of carrying it alone.
